Dean Julio Ottino is pleased to announce that Jianmin Qu, professor and associate chair for administration at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, will join the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as chair and Walter P. Murphy Professor.

A native of China, Qu graduated with a BS degree in mathematics from Jilin University, China. He then came to the United States for graduate studies and received his MS and PhD degrees in theoretical and applied mechanics from Northwestern University, working with Jan Achenbach. After two years of postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania, Qu joined the faculty at Georgia Tech in 1989.

Qu’s research focuses on several areas of theoretical and applied mechanics including micromechanics of composites, interfacial fracture and adhesion, fatigue and creep damage in solder alloys, defects and transport in crystalline solids, thermomechanical reliability of microelectronic packaging, and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of advanced engineering materials. He has authored/co-authored one book, 10 book chapters and over 100 referred journal papers in these areas.

Qu’s research has been supported by government agencies (NSF, DoE, AFOSR, ONR, DARPA, AFRL, and NRO) and private industries (Ford, IBM, Intel, AMD, TI, Pratt-Whitney, GE, Northrop Grumman, Rockwell, and Exxon). He has presented seminars, workshops and keynote talks at various conferences, universities and industries throughout Asia, America and Europe. Qu has held visiting professorships at the Technical University of Delft in The Netherlands, University of Metz in France, and Beijing University in China.
