Beach and Estuary

Thumbnail 1 shows the estuarine drainage pattern behind the protective beach. This pattern shows no direction preference because the tidal flows occur in both directions. These drainage pathways are interfingered between the organic matter that accumulates in the quiet waters behind the beach. The idealized illustrations (Sowers, 1976 and Mathewson, 1981) are cross sections that show the developing beach and its vertical interfingering of organic soils and beach sands. Thumbnail 2 shows the breakwater built to decrease the speed at which the mouth will inevitably silt over. The circular deposits are the dredge spoil piles. Home
