Our undergraduate programs are designed to prepare graduates to:
Build and manage infrastructure and natural systems by employing their knowledge of science, mathematics, and engineering in practice, research, and management.
Our program is strongly based on natural and engineering sciences, which provides a sound and long-lasting foundation for our graduates. We teach state of the art concepts and methods, engage students in realistic problem solving, and emphasize the development of oral and written communications skills. Our new Engineering First program brings students into engineering problem solving, design, and communications, in their first year of study.
Become leaders in organizations that focus on advanced problem solving for complex systems in multidisciplinary settings such as: advanced, technical civil and environmental engineering practice; management consulting; engineering-science graduate study; law, management, medicine.
Most of our students begin their careers as civil engineers, but some go on to other fields, including non-technical work. A Northwestern Education is both broad and deep; undergraduate study in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern creates rather than forecloses future options for our students.
Play key roles in the process of constructing, managing and sustaining local and global infrastructure and natural systems
This is accomplished in the classroom, through seminars with leaders and by field trips that take advantage of our Chicago location, all of which demonstrate to students the key roles played by civil and environmental engineers
Become involved in broadly conceived organizations throughout their life that require a diversity of thought, creativity, and curiosity.
An interest in life-long learning and service is instilled by fostering personal growth, independence, confidence, and curiosity through individual group and community projects and research, as well as instilling the pride of professionalism.
Undergraduate program requirements are flexible, permitting qualified students to pursue their own interests through choices of courses, participation in the honors program, engaging in research with faculty, and through community service.
